Plan a Perfect San Francisco Weekend Getaway

San Francisco is known for being the home of the Golden Gate Bridge and the burgeoning technology industry. However, it’s also known as a great place to spend a weekend. There are many things to do and sights to see that planning a trip to the “City by the Bay” can seem overwhelming. TravelBarista is here to help! Here are some of our suggestions:

Lombard Street

Lombard Street is known for being the world’s most crooked street. For that reason alone, you need to spend some time here. The street can be driven down (carefully, as its a twisted and turning brick-paved one-way road). Once you’re at the bottom, spend some time looking up at its interesting features and garden-lined pathways. Unique and picturesque at the same time!

Alcatraz and the Fisherman’s Wharf

Alcatraz Island was the home of a highly secure federal prison. The entire area is now a National Recreation Area, as well as a National Historic Landmark. You can still tour the now-defunct prison. Tickets for the tour are sold online. Most include transportation to the island via ferry, plus an audio tour of the prison. Once you return from Alcatraz, spend some time at the Fisherman’s Wharf. Make sure to stop at Ghirardelli Square and treat yourself to something sweet.

Alamo Square

Even though you might not have heard of Alamo Square, you more than likely have seen it. Yes, those painted ladies – the Victorian Houses – in the opening credits of the television show Full House can be seen here. There’s also a beautiful view of the city from the top of the hill.

Crissy Fields

Crissy Field was once a military airfield located close to the Golden Gate Bridge. It’s now a conservation area complete with plenty of greenery and trails. It’s a very long beach, with a trail “Golden Gate Promenade” along it, easy for dogs & families. There’s also a tidal marsh and plenty of picnic tables. I recommended spending some time on the trails before settling down to eat lunch in this picturesque location on the beach.

Take a Cable Car

It wouldn’t be a trip to San Francisco without a ride in a cable car. One great trip involves taking the car to Union Square and then you can walk to the beautiful Ferry Building. For the ideal ride, start the ride by Fisherman’s Wharf.

Ride Bicycles Across the Golden Gate Bridge

Now, this is something that you’ll never forget. A trip across the Golden Gate Bridge – on a bicycle – is one of those once in a lifetime experiences that people never forget. Once you get to the other side, you can enjoy a nice lunch in either Tiburon or Sausalito.

Spend Some Time in Wine Country - Napa Valley & Sonoma

Of course, if you want to venture outside of the city, there’s no better place to go than wine country. Both St. Helena and Healdsburg are a short drive away, and our top favorite places in wine country.
