How to Raise Kids Who Share Your Enthusiasm for Traveling
June 28, 2017
Picture this – you’re on a trip to a fantastic location, someplace that’s been on your travel bucket list for quite some time. And instead of spending your days wandering around, taking in the sights, and eating new-to-you dishes at local restaurants, you’re dealing with your kids, who are upset at not being home and don’t want to do anything. All of a sudden, your trip is less fun.
Thankfully, it’s entirely possible to raise kids to who love to travel, so the scenario described above won’t happen. Consider following these tips:
Start Traveling When They’re Young
The earlier you travel with your kids, the quicker they’ll adjust to seeing new places and experiencing new things. They’ll grow up excited to see the world – not missing their friends and comfortable spaces back home. In fact, thanks to smartphones and social media, your kids can stay in touch with their friends, and show them all of the cool things that they’re seeing while on vacation.
Encourage Things That They Like
It’s easy to plan an entire trip – or some excursions while at a destination – around what your children like, without having to go to Disney World or Disneyland every year. (Although these are great places to go, as well.) For example, if your child likes animals, then find a cool local zoo to visit. Most major urban cities have one. Activities planned around what your kids like will keep them interested, and they’ll learn something at the same time.
Set a Good Example for Them
Setting a good example for your kids while abroad – or even on a domestic vacation – involves being enthusiastic and willing to try new things. This works very well when your kids are young. If they see you being open to all of the possibilities that come with traveling, they will be the same way. It’s very true that kids learn from their parents, as well as all of the other close adults in their lives, so make sure that your attitude remains positive and your mind is open.
As you can see, it’s fairly easy to raise kids that enjoy traveling. As long as you choose things that they’ll like, start taking them on trips when they’re young, and set a positive example, your kids will be expert world travelers who like to see the world and everything that it offers.
