Do Your Research
Even if you’re going to a place where they speak your language, like London or Sydney, you still need to do your research before you arrive. You need to look at the weather, local customs, places to avoid and dress codes. When you’re armed with this information, you’ll feel more confident at you walk around and explore your new city.
The internet is your best source so check out all different travel sites and blogs (like this one) to get a better understanding of where you’re going. You might also head to a few forums to ask questions if you have them.
Keep All Your Booking Information in One Place
Before you take off, make sure you have all your travel information ready to go. Of all the safe solo traveling tips for women, this one is especially important, so listen up!
Go over your flight plans, train tickets and hotel reservations one more time before you leave, preferably a week in advance. Make sure all the times and dates are correct. If you see any problems, call your hotel or airline to correct the problem. Doing this will make you feel more at ease as you go from terminal to terminal.
Always keep the addresses of your hotels handy. Though you may have a plan to take the subway to your hotel, something could go wrong. You might get on the wrong train going in the wrong direction. When you get lost, you might panic or feel vulnerable. If you have your address, then you can always hop in a cab and let the driver take you to your destination. It’s a good fallback in case Plan A doesn’t work out.
Download WhatsApp and Other Texting Apps
If you’re traveling abroad, then your cell phone probably won’t work unless you have WiFi, and even then, you might not be able to call or receive regular text messages. With WhatsApp, you only need WiFi to send text messages to loved ones.
This will make you feel more at ease wherever you are. You can easily text your friends and assure your family that you’re safe through WhatsApp. When you make new travel friends, you can also communicate with them without having to pay high fees.
Pick Safe Destinations
Some places are safer than others. The best way to stay safe while traveling solo is to avoid places that make you feel unsafe or insecure.
Look up locations that are more female friendly, like some of the major European cities. Once you get used to traveling alone, then you’ll feel more confident going to other locations.
