How to Conquer Your Fear of Flying
Everyone’s afraid of something – spiders, snakes, the dark, whatever – but if you have a fear of flying, then traveling can seem like a nightmare for you. Luckily, you’re not alone. This fear is actually fairly common, so you shouldn’t feel like you’re the only one.
Need some help conquering your fear of flying? Here are my best tips and suggestions to help you get started.
Know Your Facts
It may surprise you, but flying is actually the safest form of traveling. Yep, that’s right. Flying on a plane is safer than traveling by train, bus or car. In 2013, an economist named Ian Savage looked at the number of deaths per billion passengers per mode of transportation and verified which mode was more likely to result in someone’s death.
According to Savage’s work, there are approximately 0.07 deaths per billion passengers on planes. Trains have a 0.43 death per billions rate, and cars have a 2.3 rate. Motorcycles actually have the highest rate at 213.
It’s also important to know that 90 percent of airborne accidents are also survivable, says the European Transport Safety Council.
As you can see, it’s much safer statistically to fly, but you can do other things to help you feel more comfortable in the air. Study the safety rules and regulations on the plane before you board. Before each flight, your attendants will go through a set of safety instructions. Go through those instructions on your own at home. You’ll feel more confident when you know the safety features by heart.
Speak with an Attendant
If you have to fly, one of the first things you do once you get on the plane and seated is let your flight attendants know about your fear. Don’t feel foolish to admit it. It’s far more common than you might think.
Your flight attendants have probably helped a lot of people with the same fear before. They’ll be able to give you great recommendations to help keep your fear under control throughout the flight. During the flight, they’ll be looking out for you, and they’ll make a point to come around and check on you. With a few friends around, you’ll feel more at ease throughout the flight.
Prepare for Impact App
But what if there was a way to prepare for a crash, like through a simulation? Now you can with the Prepare for Impact app. This hand app functions as more of a game than a tool. It was designed by programmers at the University of Udine in Italy to help people understand what to do in the event of an airplane crash.
Each time you use the app, you’ll have a different “worst-case” scenario, such as a water landing, a runway crash or a fire. With each scenario, you’ll be able to test out different ways to handle each situation The more you know, the better chance you have that you’ll survive. For example, knowing when to brace and what to do in a fire will help you make it off the plane safely.
